A Full Plate for Canada’s Birthday October 30, 2016




A Full Plate is a Creston and District (from Yahk to Riondel) committee that is trying to be an organizing force for promoting and documenting local celebrations around food and art during Canada 150. Please read their description below, and contact us if you have a project or event idea for celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday!

In June someone suggested that a fun way to celebrate Canada 150 locally might be to bring increased awareness of the diversity of food culture in our area though the arts. The idea has taken hold in the ensuing months with expressions of interest shown from many we’ve shared it with so far. We are a grass roots committee who’ve met to begin to envision and structure this idea and want to reach out to the community from Yahk to Riondel to see who is inspired and what might be possible: from artists of all mediums and anyone in the food industries.

The Community of Creston Arts Council has agreed to receive funds on our behalf, and as an ad hoc committee we are responsible for overseeing and facilitating the project. We have made a connection with Fields Forward and are identified as a working group under them: Food and Culture.

Our mandate is to promote the idea and the projects/events, help bring interested people together, create media/media connections for sharing the resulting projects and collaborate with stakeholders.

A Full Plate was the name chosen to acknowledge the food culture and bounty we live with here.

Bringing the arts and agriculture together to tell stories could be a timely way to make new connections especially with the growing interest in food security and the role of the arts for enhancing cultural awareness. This could bring awareness of the diverse culture and experiences of food producers and give our creative community an opportunity to showcase their skills in unique ways.

From Yahk to Riondel, we hope to stimulate interest from growers, producers, artists of all kinds, individuals, groups, and to help connect them with one another and see what happens. Annual community events could include this as a theme within their celebrations. Some people might have a venue to offer for an event, some might have skills and resources to share, want to organize a display, an event…This is an all ages opportunity. We wonder what stories the food producers might want told, who else in the community might have ideas to get involved.

We picture a year long opportunity to capture the seasons, the process, the products, the inside stories begging to be told, little windows into our food culture. We imagine videos, writings, music, installations…personal projects or public events. The resulting collaborations might be something that we can post on our web page, you tube channel or FaceBook. We want to work with local media to promote events that come under The Full Plate umbrella for the year…articles, calendar of events…

While this sounds rather grand…we don’t expect extensive full documentation of the topic, but hope at the least that whoever is inspired to participate will be recognized, that we will all enjoy the process and the end results and have a legacy to pass on.
